On Saturday, January 18, 2020, the annual Wakulla County Arbor Day celebration will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Hudson Park in Crawfordville. Learn more about why Arbor Day is so important for the environment, and how you can get the most out of your visit.

Enjoy a celebration of trees in the winter

As residents of Wakulla County, our connection to the natural world around us is one of the most vital parts of our community. It’s what makes our area so unique among many destinations in the south and the U.S. as a whole, and we take every opportunity we can to celebrate this part of our heritage with other residents and our guests.

That’s why the annual Arbor Day celebration is one of our most beloved traditions. This fantastic event is organized by the Iris Garden Club of Wakulla County, and it’s a great opportunity to honor the importance of trees in our world.

Since national Arbor Day is celebrated in April you may be wondering why ours takes place in January. It all has to do with our ecosystem, as this is the time of year where many tree species are dormant and can be transported more easily without losing excessive amounts of water.

Take home your very own tree to plant

The centerpiece of Wakulla County’s Arbor Day celebration is the selection of trees available. The Wakulla County Garden Club provides over a thousand free trees at the event, so every attendee can take home their own to plant in their yard. If extra trees are available they can usually be obtained for a small donation. By planting a tree you not only help reduce air pollution, conserve energy, and provide a habitat for native species, you also help to keep your community as beautiful as possible.

Get tips from expert gardeners while enjoying food, live music, and more

Unsure about how to care for your new tree or have other questions that only a master gardener can answer? Then you’re in luck, because several local experts will be on hand at the event to help you out. Come prepared with your questions, because these volunteers are a valuable knowledge resource when it comes to plants native to our area. And the fun doesn’t end there, because the celebration carries on with live music, activities for the kids, local food and beverage vendors, and unique items for sale from locals artisans and craftspeople.
