The Bay's public boat ramps and fishing pier welcome boating and fishing enthusiasts. Nature lovers might see a majestic bald eagle swoop to catch his breakfast, watch a multitude of varied seashore and wading birds, or perhaps even glimpse a vivid pink Roseate Spoonbill on the leisurely shores of Mashes Sands. This laid-back beach offers a perfect view: it is where freshwater meets the salt water of Apalachee Bay, which is one of the healthiest and most productive bays in the United States. Picnic or beachcomb along this natural area, and walk the sandbars at low tide. Spot dolphins as they navigate the inshore waters, crisscrossing the pristine bay in search of their next meal.
Are you looking for recreational trails? In the Ochlockonee Bay community, you can access cycling, paddling, and hiking trails that take you past hidden beachfront communities, through unspoiled marshes, and across forest lands. Enjoy unique views of our unhurried North Florida lifestyle and the Bay's natural, untamed beauty. Premier wildlife views and seasonal hunting opportunities can also be found in the Panacea territory of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge that borders Surf Road.
Ochlockonee Bay plays host to the Wakulla County Regional Airport, a 15-acre park with a grassy runway that serves general aviation aircraft daily from dawn to dusk. The airport supports flight training, sport and recreational flying, and visiting aircraft. The airport also serves the fly- and live-in community of Tarpine. Watch for summer airplane rides and skydiving demonstrations.
Ochlockonee Bay is home to the famous Angelo and Son’s seafood restaurant. Originally built over the water in 1945 using salvaged lumber from military Camp Gordon Johnson, this landmark building was damaged beyond repair during the devastating storm surge created by Hurricane Dennis in 2005. The fortified building that stands today next to the bridge was rebuilt with a dogged determination to continue a Wakulla family's legacy. Across from Angelo's, situated directly on the scenic Bay, is Holiday Campground. This well-established park and campground offers a full range of amenities, including camping spots for recreational vehicles and tents, while providing a good home base for exploring the entire coastal area.
